A 2029 federal standard sets a new efficiency level for electric storage water heaters over 35 gallons — after May 6, 2029, manufacturers will meet it with heat-pump (hybrid) technology. It is a manufacturing standard, not an installation ban: nothing already in your home has to change. It does mean the hybrid is where electric tanks are headed, so we quote it alongside a standard tank and tankless, with real installed prices, and you choose.

New 2029 Water Heater Standard
Effective May 6, 2029, a U.S. Department of Energy standard raises the required efficiency of electric storage water heaters larger than 35 gallons — a level standard resistance tanks cannot reach, so manufacturers will build those sizes as heat-pump (hybrid) units. It is a manufacturing cutoff, not an installation ban: existing heaters stay in service, and standard tanks built before the date can still be installed.
What it means for a replacement today: the hybrid is where electric water heating is going, and choosing it now means one purchase instead of two. A hybrid pulls heat from the surrounding air, which is why it runs on two to three times less electricity than a resistance tank — and why South Florida garages and utility rooms suit it well. It costs more up front, needs a little clearance and a condensate drain, and pays that back on the electric bill.
Repair or replace? Under 6 years old with a failed element or thermostat: repair it. Past 10 years, or leaking from the tank seam: replace it — a leaking seam never heals, and the flood costs more than the heater. In between, we put the repair price and the replacement options side by side, in writing, and let the math decide.

Do I have to switch to a hybrid?
No. The 2029 federal standard governs how new electric storage water heaters over 35 gallons are manufactured; it does not require anyone to replace a working heater, and standard tanks remain available. We quote the hybrid because it is the better long-term replacement for most 40–80 gallon electric tanks — not because a rule forces it.
Can you really install today?
For standard 40/50-gallon electric tanks, usually yes when you call in staffed hours (8am–10pm daily). Hybrids and gas conversions may add a day for the right unit.
Why do your prices include more than the big-box quote?
Florida code requires pans, T&P discharge, strapping, and permits — items teaser quotes add after you’ve committed. Our installed price includes them up front.
Is tankless worth looking at while mine is dead?
If your hot-water outage is an inconvenience, yes — a conversion adds a day but ends the tank cycle for ~20 years, installed by Rinnai Pro and Navien certified installers. If you need hot water tonight, the tank or hybrid wins. You get all three numbers either way.
